A digital scratch card does one thing a photo message cannot: it makes the other person work for the reveal. Three seconds of scratching, and the content lands differently — because they uncovered it themselves.
Here is how to make one, and what separates the ones that get a reaction from the ones that get a “nice, thanks.”
Making it: the actual steps
- Pick a mode. The mode decides the graphics and the reveal animation — birthday, love, pregnancy announcement, gender reveal, proposal, prank, or a plain one for anything else.
- Add what you’re hiding. A photo, a written message, or both. In video mode the clip starts pixelated and sharpens as they scratch.
- Write the sender name. Skip this and the recipient opens an anonymous link, which reads as spam rather than as a surprise.
- Share the link. Copy it, or send it straight through WhatsApp, Telegram or any messaging app.
What to hide under the silver
The reveal is a punchline. It works when it’s short and specific.
Works:
- A photo of the two of you from a day they’ll recognise instantly
- Six words: “Tickets booked. Friday. Pack for warm weather.”
- An ultrasound image, for a pregnancy announcement
- One question: “Will you marry me?”
Doesn’t work:
- A long paragraph. They’re scratching, not reading an email.
- A generic stock image. Nothing to uncover means nothing to react to.
- An inside joke that needs three lines of setup.
The timing nobody thinks about
Send it when they can actually look. A scratch card that arrives during a meeting gets opened four hours later, alone, in a corridor — and the moment is gone.
Mid-morning on a weekday, or early evening, tends to land best. For anything major — a proposal, a pregnancy — send it when you know they’re somewhere they can react without an audience, unless the audience is the point.
